PROJECT
The cell proposes integrating and articulating different public, having
the circulation of art as a starting point. Understanding the artist as
producer and creator of situations in which Art
is manifested, inside or outside galeries and institutions, is also in
sight.
One of the main objectives of the group is broadening the artists’
creation range of possibilities, as well as diversifying space occupation.
Moreover, building practical conditions in which the artist may carry
out his/her projects is fundamental.
Activities
Pinhole
the needle hole camera
Proposing to work on the photography techniques and language, using low
cost materials, such as aluminum cans or shoe boxes, a teaching project
was created: Pinhole – the needle hole camera. The project can be
formatted in several different ways because of its modular structure.
The workshops are developed so as to unveil what happens inside the camera,
thus, desmistifying, the construction of the photographic image. It has
been held in the following communities in and around the city of Rio de
Janeiro: Morro do Borel, Morro dos Prazeres e Baixada Fluminense.
Pinhole – the needle hole camera project can be held in schools
or communities.
Directing and Mounting
Directing, production and setting of exhibits and events that search new
midia and space where Contemporary Art can be presented.
Accomplished jobs: exhibit in RioCenaContemporânea Theater International
Festival, in Rio de Janeiro; Galpão das Artes, Rio de Janeiro Museum
of Modern Art (2003); launching Project Subsolo as an exhibit site during
the Rio de Janeiro International Festival of Photography - FotoRio-RJ
(2003); Art direction of Espaço Odisséia/Subsolo, Teatro
Odisséia, Lapa, Rio de janeiro (2004); Duets with urban artists
86, from Rio de Janeiro and Calma, from São Paulo, in the Projeto
Subsolo garage (2004).
Courses and Workshops
Group study and courses in association with artists and/or critics and
students of Arts, Phylosophy, Photography, Digital Midia, Music, Video,
Cinema and New Technologies.
Production
Exhibits of Visual Performances, Setting Image in Space, Educational Projects,
Rounds of Debates/Speeches, Videos and Editorial Publishing of Art are
a few work productions in progress.

History
Ana Angélica Costa, Janaína Garcia e Roberta Macedo, artist-photographers
founders of Projeto Subsolo have been together since 2000. Ever since,
they have put on projects in the teaching of photography and debates around
artworks that involve the use of image.
The name Subsolo came up spontaneously, the first location was the basement
of a friend’s house in the Rio de Janeiro district of Santa Teresa,
subsolo is the portuguese word for underground. Projeto came next, for
the flexible character of the initiative, for the fact of always being
in construction. Projeto Subsolo – articulation cell came out from
the need to articulate partnerships that made the projects possible.
At first, the three got together in an attempt to solve a common problem:
room for elaborating their individual art projects. But, what was most
important was to be together, exchange information, comment, discuss and
criticize their work.
Today, Projeto Subsolo is located in one of the ateliers at number 71
Rua Joaquim Silva, Lapa, a renowned art district in the city of Rio de
Janeiro. There are seven different artists’ studios on the same
building. The change of address, from Santa Teresa to Lapa, brought many
benefits for the group: the daily contact with other artists, the proximity
with the downtown area of the city and transportation facilities were
undoubtedly factors that helped the cell grow.
In the second semester of 2003, Projeto Subsolo started taking part in
the program Iniciativa Jovem, developed by the partnership Dialog/Shell.
In June 2004, was awarded a prize as second best enterprise of the year
in the event Vitrine de Negócios. For that, gets the Shell quality
lable and enters the program incubator, where it will stay for two years.
Partnerships
The concept art circulation / movement of public proposed by Projeto Subsolo
would not make sense without the articulation with partners.
